As a 30+ year private pilot I go through the same procedure every time I power the aircraft up for take-off. I’ll be listening to the engine, watching the gauges and feeling the controls, waiting for that magic airspeed number when I can safely pull back and lift into the air. However, knowing where I am on the runway (especially if I’m unfamiliar) and at what point I’d abandon the take-off and safely stop if something didn’t seem right is, at times quite difficult, especially if it’s a rough field or unmarked short strip.
